We Can Work From Home

It’s been almost 10 months since the world stopped. At the time, it was temporary. A few weeks turned into a few months and then everything after that just melted together into a summer and fall of coping. What was seemingly a homebody’s dream ended up being like a choose your adventure book from hell. The only plus is that due to social distancing, we are normalizing letting people put their card, money, and/or receipt away at the checkout line before breathing down their neck.

I’ve been one of the fortunate and privileged ones. I have been able to keep my job and work from home. My issues are tiny compared to those who have been struggling to make ends meet.
Luckily, my biggest problem was figuring out where to work. The couch was the obvious answer at first when it seemed like it would all be temporary, however that fast became unsustainable.
I didn’t have an office set up yet and I’m convinced there are ZERO comfortable dining room chairs and if there are, I certainly don’t have them. Working from bed felt a lot like a disaster waiting to happen. I can go from being wide awake to convincing myself that a quick cat nap is all I need to hibernating in a very short period of time. It’s just not a risk we can take.
With all of that said, I knew I needed an office.

BEFORE

I bought a chair, desk, rug, and lamp. I was really proud of how the space came together, but the dark blue accent wall just didn’t have the right vibe.

DURING

Green is my favorite color and I’ve always always wanted to try shiplap, so the design was an easy choice for me.
I went with Sherwin Williams Fresh Balsam, and I always get whatever the most expensive paint is - trust me, it makes a difference.

The blue tape is where I THINK the studs are. I honestly have no idea because townhome walls have a cement firewall which makes finding studs hard. If I drilled a hole and it seemed like just drywall, I used a toggle bolt and called it a day.

AFTER

I added the light fixtures and put everything else back in place! The two sconces on the wall are not electrically hooked up. They are just attached with good ol fashioned Command Strips. I bought puck lights that run on batteries that I can add where the lightbulb would go if I want additional light.
I love how it turned out!

WAIT! THERE’S A LITTLE MORE

The opposite wall got a little refresh, too!

Working from home was a big adjustment, but a refreshed office space made the change a little easier.
