Baby’s First Cold: 8 Items We Used to Survive
Sicko Mode /sikō mōd/ The survivalist mindset a new mom goes into when she tries to care for her infant during his first cold while also being sick herself.
We’ve been lucky not to get sick until now, but there are somethings I wish I knew before the first time he got sick.
Being sick while also taking care of a sick baby is like the designated driver getting drunk at brunch. Wait. More like getting drunk in an escape room.
It’s so scary being responsible for this little person who’s sick. What if he can’t breathe? Is he crying because he just wants to be held or is something more serious going on that I don’t know about?
No one told me they can’t breathe through their nose, so they can’t use their binky, which upsets them, so they want their binky, but they can’t use their binky because they can’t breathe through their nose…
I’m never having another baby because I cannot emotionally handle watching my tiny human be sick.
I still have to take care of myself! 4 days into this Snot-pocalypse, I realized I hadn’t spent very much time taking care of myself. I was just so worried about Poppy! Finally, I called the doctor and was able to get in for a same-day sick appointment. I was out of town, which is what I call being at my parents’ house 45 minutes away, so he was able to do a virtual appointment. It was a relief.
I’m gonna need a lot of the supplies - aspirator, snot sucker, nasal spray, etc - thank god for Target Drive-up orders.

Nasal Aspirator
At first, he thought this was hilarious. It seems to work well for snot that’s ready to leave his nostrils. I’m convinced there’s no way to get and keep this clean though, so I’m definitely tossing it after approximately 48 hours.
NoseFrida
aka the Snotsucker aka the snot straw. Desperate times call for desperate actions. Using a tube, I sucked snot out of his nose. It seemed to work better on the more stubborn snot.
Boogie Wipes and Boogie Mist
He hates it all, but it works. Sometimes I even use the wipes to blow my nose.
Frida 4-in-1 Tool
This was really good in the morning. Think of an ice pic used to remove the snot glaciers that have formed.
Thermometer
I took his temperature about 46 times a day.
Tylenol
I used this as recommended by his pediatrician.
Vasaline for his nose
This helped with the dry skin.
We survived Snotpocalypse 2k22, but the aftermath was…disgusting.
